I know that Cochin chickens and Silkie chickens make good surrogate mothers. But, are there any others? Please help!Which chicken breeds make good surrogate mothers?
If you mean breeds that go broody (her hormones tell her the time is right to hatch eggs( then yes those 2 breeds you mention are good but not every Silkie is guaranteed to go broody. I have also had Marans go broody as well as Light Sussex crosses %26amp; Silkie crosses
You cannot just give a hen chicks that have hatched already she will reject them %26amp; may well kill them, she will only accept eggs. You have to wait until she goes broody (sits tight on the nest 24/7 just coming off to eat/poop) then throw away any eggs she has been sitting on and substitute the eggs you want her to hatch. This could be turkey, duck or chicken eggs, even Guinea Fowl. The hen won't mind what hatches out. If she is not broody she won't hatch sit on the nest to hatch the eggs out
Hatching eggs need to be stored correctly prior to setting under the broody hen who should be in her own small coop with a pen attached. This is so she can hatch in peace without disturbance from other hens. There is a lot to learn about hatching eggs, plenty of information on the internet.
agree, I have an old English bant and she was brilliant, goldline are the worst in my opinion, my bant had not only 2 of her own but the goldies slipped in another 11 eggs under her and she wouldn't let me take em out, so i let her, she hatched them all except 3 that wern't fertileWhich chicken breeds make good surrogate mothers?
