especially if a couple wants to adopt a third baby.Since the pregnancy would be a very high risk pregnancy for them %26amp; not a normal one? What are the advantages %26amp; disadvantages of having a baby born through a surrogate mother ?
The advantages to surrogacy are that you are related genetically to the child, you are able to participate in the pregnancy and it is relatively safe legally. Contrary to what the poster said above who carried for her sister, there is almost no risk of a surrogate being able to keep a child if she is a gestational surrogate. There can be difficulties if you use a traditional surrogate, but most situations today use an egg donor and a gestational surrogate if need be. In that case, the surrogate would have no leg to stand on if she wanted to keep the baby. Adoption has a higher risk of losing the baby to a birth mother who changes her mind before or after the birth. In surrogacy, it is not as common as people think for the gestational surrogate to have trouble handing over the child. Most know exactly what they are getting into emotionally before they do it and react how they think they will.
Cons: You have to put your blind faith in a surrogate and it is extremely expensive. Sometimes the surrogate lives in a different state so you do not get to be there for doctor appointments. You and the surrogate, no matter how much you screen, can have difference of opinions on pregnancy decisions and even though you have the legal right, it can be a tense situation.
Hi there, I can answer your question, because I was a surrogate for my sister. The advantages are that you know that the surrogate will eat healthy, exercise, and put the well being of the baby before herself. The disadvantages are that you won't be able to be there for every appointment, most surros are very private people, and sometimes they renig on the contract, especially if they wish to keep the baby.
My suggestion is that you contact: www.surrogatemothers.com. They can give you any information that you might need. You MUST get a lawyer involved that specializes in contracts between surrogates and biological parents. My sister and I had to do this, in order for me to hand over custody of my nieces. A lot of states don't recognize surrogate/biological parent contracts, so find out what the laws in your state are.
