Can an austistic female be surrogate mother?

I know a friend who is unable to have a child on her own, she has an autistic sister who she would trust having her child. Both husband, wife, and sister would do the DNA testing not to pass the autism gene back.

The sister with autism loves babies. Can an austistic female be surrogate mother?
the baby could have autism because her auntie has it, but when it's surrogate aint they using her egg to place in her sisters body.
If the autistic sister has not given birth to her own children before, then she is not able to become a surrogate mother.

If she has, and is deemed legally able to enter into a contract, it would probably be permissible for her to be a surrogate mother to a family member, but not a surrogate mother commercially, for strangers. Can an austistic female be surrogate mother?
There is no test for an autism gene, except in rare cases like fragile X, so most likely a DNA test cannot rule out passing on autism.

There is some evidence about gene issues, but no specific gene that can be tested reliably.

But, a person with autism might be able to consent to do this. This would have to be done on an individual basis.

it would be possible to use artificial insemination as opposed to fertilizing the egg outside the womb
Yes, it's possible. Depending on the type of Autism. If she has Asperger's, I wouldn't see the problem with this.

If the female is lower functioning, then there's an issue there.

Is she able to understand the things that she is signing. Can she even sign contracts/papers?

Also, she would be in pain for nine months. It could affect her in a positive or a negative way. Depending on the outcome, this might not be a good thing for this female. It might do her more harm then good.

As for the Autism gene thing, the baby might end up having a chance of getting Autism. Maybe Asperger's Syndrome or Classic Autism. So tell your friend to think about this carefully.

Also they have to think about the child's future. How would the child feel when their eighteen years old and knowing that they ended up with Asperger's Syndrome, and their birth mom is Autistic. I don't think the kid could handle this.

So if I were you, I wouldn't ask this on Yahoo Answers. I would ask a professional about this. Like a Psychiatrist or Psychologist. Ask a Neurologist as well.

Oh yeah to elaine2rn, Autism isn't a form of retardation. Neither is Asperger's Syndrome.
I would need more info to make a good explanation.

I believe they can do anything they put their mind towards.

I have seen autistic people do almost anything. I have a friend that is a police officer for a local jurisdiction.

Some issues to think on ..... level of functional independence.

level of rational thought (not perseverating on just one thing...)

ability to find resources

ability to understand the responsibility

family support system

local community resources

etc.
I imagine physically she has the ability to bear a child??!! However, what are the ethics of this situation; how will this go when this retarded kid has to give up the baby she's been carrying for 9 months to her sister, where she will still have contact?

Can a retarded person consent???

P.S Autism not inherited by genes.....
This is not really an answer to the question but more or less just to clear up the "genetic" misunderstanding here.

The genetic condition fragile X syndrome may result in autism, fragile X is the leading KNOWN genetic cause of autism.
Not if she can not legally sign contracts for herself. This is news about the Autism gene. It was my understanding scientists have no clue as to what causes autism.
